Spittoon – Ultimate Accessory

Porta-Toon

Porta-Toon Spittoon

The Porta-toon® is the small, perfect pocket sized spittoon you’ve been searching for. It opens with a single flick of the thumb, ready to use. Leakproof and made of food grade, dishwasher-safe plastic, it has no smell with just a daily rinse.

It is black, small (3″ x 3″) and flask-shaped. This allows the tobacco user to be discreet and not offend others.

The Porta-toon removes the ‘yuk’ factor from using smokeless tobacco around other people!

It’s creation was spurred by being around one too many smokeless tobacco users, watching them
— spitting out of vehicle windows
— hunting for garbage cans in stores and movies
— spitting into soda cans and glasses in restaurants and planes

…and noticing the sneers on the faces of everyone else.

There MUST be a better way:

All the Grizzly varieties are packaged in a 1.2 ounce black container and even come with a metal lid. It does depend on what kind you get but the chew gives 2.31-2.67 mg nicotine per gram. Which I really have no clue what that means but they due rank second overall in the amount of nicotine compared to other more costly name brands.

It is also referred to as such things as “discount tobacco” or as “The Welfare Bear” due to it usually costing less than $2.00.

Grizzly also has a rating system that is inscribed on it cans. It is ranked from 0 being the worst to 11 being the best. This rating system is for how well the chew holds together and can be found by peeling back the bar code.

How To Chew Tobacco? (Beginners)

HOW TO CHEW TOBACCO: THE REAL STUFF! Like Beechnut or Redman!

This is for any beginners out there that are considering a start to happiness in chewing tobacco. Chewing tobacco has been around for what seems like forever. I started by always seeing it in the old westerns with the big leaf chew. These days you can find it in Major League Baseball, Professional Rodeo, and even in the PGA.

This step by step guide is for big leaf tobacco and not to be mistaken for smokeless tobacco, dip, or snuff products. Remember do this at your own risk and make sure you try to think about it as a hobby and not a life long ordeal because it will have health hazards down the road.

chewing tobacco

1. First you need to buy a tin of tobacco, a pouch or even a plug. These can be found at gas stations, convenience stores, and even grocery stores.

2. You just need to open the pouch first and just take a big whiff of the smell. Just from the smell you can tell if you will like the flavor or not which is really a personal preference.

3. Just start by taking off a few leaves from the pouch or plug and place, bundled up, into your cheek. This is where it differs from snuff where that is place behind your lip. Chewing tobacco gets put in your cheek by your back teeth.

4. Move it around in your mouth with your tongue so you can chew on it and get the juices flowing. Don’t chew too much so it will destroy the leaves, just gently.

5. Absolutely do not gut it (swallow it) when you first start out as more than likely your stomach will become upset.

6. When you feel you have enough juice built up to let some out then simply purse your lips together and spit out just the juice.

7. Keep doing this until the juices are no longer flowing, the flavor is gone, or you have simply had enough. Then you can just discard and rinse your mouth out.

8. Repeat this a few times by only using a few leaves then work your way up to more as you get used to it. That is all there is to it, so enjoy.

Mud Jug, DipTops, Etc.

If you are a dipper you need to consider getting a personal spittoon and preferably one that is on sale. There are many different kinds you can buy of course with mudjugs being at the top when it comes to quality.

These spittoons can be used for any kind of chewing tobacco whether it is long cut, short cut, pouches, redman chewing tobacco, grizzly snuff, etc.

Mud jugs like I said are the top when it comes to quality and variety. They are completely spill resistant, easy to clean and can hold up to 6 ounces before having to be cleaned. Mudjugs also come in a wide variety of colors like camo, orang, confederate flag, pink camo, and other full colors.

Amazon Image

The only downside is they can be little pricey coming in at around $35-$40 buck for anyone with a design and around $20 without. The investment is worth it since they are very durable and easy to clean. You can get this fine product at mud jug’s website or even on places like amazon.

The other option when it comes to a personal spittoon is the one of the clip on variety. What do I mean by clip on? They are called DipTops which are a snap on spittoon top that will go on to almost any beverage can in the U.S. This company has been in business since 2003.

Amazon Image

They are great for being on the go or on the road anywhere since mud jugs are a little bulky to carry through an airport or something like that. The other plus is they are a lot cheaper with one being around $3 and a 12 pack will only set you back about $19. These can also be purchased directly form their website or from amazon as well.

The other portable spittoon is just like a mudjug only a little bit cheaper. They can be found at amazon and come with free shipping with a few different colors running at around $21. These come with a screw on top so they can be completely spill proof and also have a deodorant compartment to keep any smell at bay.

History of The Spittoon

Spittoons

A spittoon or spitoon is a container for spitting into specifically for people who dip and chew tobacco. It is also called a spitter most of the time. A spittoon can be considered also a can or any old beverage that is now used to hold spit. It all started in the U.S. back in the 19th century where spittoons took on the country in a hurry becoming common almost anywhere which includes bars, pubs, hotels, stores, banks, railway carriages, brothels and anywhere else where people, mostly men, gathered together.

The old antique spittoons you see are almost all made out of brass and are still in use today. There were spittoons made out of other materials as well which included iron, glass and porcelain. They were seen in low places and places of the wealthy where they were much more decorated.

Specialized spittoons (non-tin cans) are weighted so they will be more difficult to tip over and even have what is called an “inner lip” that will help prevent spilling even if it does tip over. Some of them even had lids or a hole that was plugged and released the liquid. This made it much easier when draining.

When it came to spittoons they were actually created for better health environments where people used to spit on floors of establishments and on sidewalks where non-spitters walked. A place where you can see a large amount of antique spittoons in one area is at Duke Homestead State Historic Site in Durham, North Carolina. Back in 2008 they actually added 282 spittoons bringing their total to around 400 claiming to be the largest collection in the world.

Now in the 21st century spittoons are of course still made, but you won’t find them in any public places at least not in to many. The one area where you do find them is for wine tasters of all things. When a wine taster takes a sample of a wine they will spit out to avoid over intoxication or for the most part the wine didn’t taste very well.

Amazon Image

Of all places to find a spittoon is at the United States Supreme Court where each one of the Justices has one next to her or his chair in the courtroom. Of course they don’t actually chew tobacco and spit into them they are used for wastebaskets. The last time they were used for actual tobacco was back in the early 20th century. Even the U.S. Senate has them spread out in the Senate Chamber because by many it is just considered a Senate Tradition.

Today spittoons and spittoon accessories have come a long way. You have the new breed which is the mud jug. It is made to be spill proof, decorative, perfect handle, portable, durable and easy cleaning. This item is made for people who just don’t wanna spit in a can or put a paper towel in a cup like that. Now if you still want to spit in a can there are options to make this much easier which includes a diptop. This is a snap-on spittoon that goes on most any beverage can sold in the USA.

MUD JUG (Portable Spittoon)

Mud Jugs are made to last

The mud jug portable spittoon is the best portable spittoon you buy for this day and age. The company was founded by a couple dippers themselves named Darcy and Jeff. Many may ask why mudjug? If you are a dipper and use a can or bottle you will quickly see why to get one of these. Myself I used to always use a plastic cup at home and put a paper towel in it so it would be more spill resistant.

Even after a couple dips it still wasn’t enough if I knocked it over it will still spill out and my wife would not be happy. These things come in so many different colors and designs they are a lot of fun to collect even. The mud jug will never be mistaken for a non-spitter beverage not that that has ever happened to myself. They are hands-free and can be used with any kind of chew, pouches, redman chewing tobacco, etc.

Mud Jug

When you buy one you will definitely want to have more so you can have them ready everywhere whether it be the garage, car, office, or hunting camp. I take them with me to poker games and anywhere where I might just pop a dip in.

Mudjugs when you first look at them you probably ask yourself how they are spill resistant when they are basically a circular shape. They are weighted at the base first off so when they tip over they will immediately return back to their upright position.

Do they tip over? Yes but they also have a funnel design that keeps the spit from coming back out. So it is easy to spit in, but the spit will not come back out even when tipped completely upside down.

Mud Jug

So how do you clean them? You just pop the top off and dump the mud out then clean. You can either just rinse which I do most of the time and wash it with soap and water once a week. I both hand wash it and listen to this I put it in the dishwasher because they are dishwasher safe.

The first question I get by most dippers is where do you put your dip when you are done since it won’t fit through the funnel whole. This is easily answered by you can just pop the top drop in your chew or pouch and put the top back on with ease.

So there you have it they are highly durable, dishwasher safe, come in many different colors, holds about 6 ounces of mud, and work good anywhere. So get your mud jug today if you are a true dipper.
